Firefox OS smartphone to hit Indian stores later this year

Sony India mobile division plans to launch the first Firefox OS smartphone in India later this year. In fact Sony plans to relaunch is Xperia E with the brand new OS.

The device will run on on Firefox OS which is a Linux based open source operating system for smartphones and tablets developed by Mozilla. It is designed to allow HTML5 applications to communicate directly with the device’s hardware using JavaScript and open web APIs.

The significance of Firefox OS launch lies in the fact that it would compete directly with Android’s entry level smartphones and tablets. So far Android has been unchallenged in the entry level segment which make up a huge chunk in its overall business. Since Firefox OS uses HTML5, it will be easy for developers to develop apps and the OS which being light will use minimal phone resources.

The first Firefox OS smartphone, ZTE Open was launched in Spain on July 2 by Telefonica. The smartphone enthusiasts in India will have to wait till the end of the year to get their first Firefox phones.
